Salty Sow is a gastropub that has gained the attention of those from around the U.S. because of the celebrity visits and innovative menu. This establishment can serve as a place to have a group dinner, a dinner date, or a place for those looking for light bites. On my last visit to this location on June 13th of this year, I came with a partner to grab a meal before a Broadway show. Let’s get to it:
Truffled Deviled Eggs –
These gourmet truffle deviled eggs, made with truffle oil and mixed in pieces of tasty bacon, are a fan favorite. The truffle aspect of these eggs provides an upgrade to the traditional deviled egg, giving it a slightly earthy taste. The bacon paired with the truffle adds a smokiness to the appetizer, making it well rounded and a good choice for a starter. This was by far the best menu item my partner and I had while here.
Charcuterie and Cheese board –
There is no appetizer more impressive than a charcuterie board. Loaded with a variety of cured meats, cheese, nuts, fruit, and spreads, there is something on these boards for everyone. This board has an array of items ranging from mustard, figs, almonds, pickled onions, radish, liver p?· etc. These items paired nicely with the bread but weren’t items that couldn’t be found at any other restaurant. The charcuterie board was okay, but it was not worth ordering for a second time.
Collard Greens-
These greens are not typical Southern collard greens. There are many delicious ways to cook collard greens, but this is the best-known way to do it in the South: low and slow in a stockpot (or slow cooker) with plenty of bold, smoky ingredients to amp up the flavor of the greens. These greens were not that. They were vinegary and dried out. Unfortunately, this menu item as simple as it was is a miss. Based upon the decline of dishes, starting on a high declining in caliber as they were brought out; we elected to end with the greens.
This restaurant gets a 5 because of their banana fosters beignets dessert. Probably my second favorite thing I ate in Austin after the brisket at Franklin’s. Crunchy, sweet, cold, and perfectly made, I can’t recommend the bananas foster enough.
But everything else was great too. This was my big dinner as the groom since we were here for my bachelor party and it was fantastic. They sat us in a separate room, with beautiful pictures of some chickens. We ordered a bevy of things, such as smoked beef cheeks, triple fried duck fat fries, and for my entree, blackened redfish. The desserts were chocolate cake and of course the bananas foster beignets.
The fries were really tasty, and the smoked beef cheeks had a really good flavor profile while being tender as can be. My fish was cooked perfectly, and I enjoyed eating it. Chocolate cake was solid but the beignets are the stars of the meal.
I also got the “Yes Please” drink and I loved the taste of the fresh watermelon juice. Our server was a cool dude too, and made great recommendations to us. So glad this was the final dinner of my bachelor party trip.
Scrumptious bites on the happy hour menu. Service was friendly and welcoming. the vibe was excellent. Cant wait to try again when in the area. hightly reccomend.
Atmosphere/Service:
-Seated in the main dining room. Quite noisy, probably fine for a group outing but not for a date/low-key night
-Slow service. The majority of our time was spent waiting for our orders to be taken, food to arrive, etc etc
Food/Drinks:
-Chicken liver mousse in a jar: too much mousse, not enough bread. The mousse tasted like it had been sitting out for a while and despite coming with pickled onions on the side, the overall flavor profile was mediocre
-Broccolini: supersized (like a mix between broccoli and normal broccolini), not tender, the only good thing was the brown butter, don’t regret ordering but would not order again
-Slow cooked beef shoulder: meat was tender but found the dish to be quite boring
-Atlantic cod: chef’s special for the night and highly recommended, major disappointment, fish was bland, the accompanying sauce was SO salty (could not taste or enjoy anything if combined with it)
-Bananas foster beignets: more like large, oddly-shaped donuts, did not taste like beignets, minimal banana flavor, expected to be wowed based on so many phenomenal reviews but ultimately fell very short
-Blanche cocktail: your basic frozen margarita, slight orange flavor (no blood orange taste as described)
Overall impression: meh
We went here for happy hour and I was pleasantly surprised. Come earlier if you want parking. I came at 4:30 pm on a Saturday and thankfully there was plenty of parking then, but it filled up by the time I got out.
We ordered lots of items from the happy hour menu and they were all really good. We got the Truffled Deviled Eggs, Duck Fat Fries, Crispy Brussel Sprout Leaves, and the Smoked Fish Rilette. For tacos we got the Pork Belly Taco (the runny egg made it really good) and the Pork Carnitas Taco.
What a great experience!
One of our favorite HH spots! Salty Sow always serves us a tasty feast – food and drinks at a reasonable price! We ordered our usual rosemary honey fried chicken, assortment of tacos, smoked salmon rillette, duck fat fries, salad + some others! YUMMY! Our server this time was Cameron and she was fantastic!
We went on a Friday nite so the whole place was buzzing inside and outside! Great meal to start the weekend!
I had been dying to try this place and I’m so glad I finally did. All you need to know is the deviled eggs. Obviously everything else is good, but if you don’t get the deviled eggs then just don’t go???? Like the deviled eggs rocked my world… I’m not even much of a deviled egg girl!! They are to die for and I’ll leave it at that.
The petite filets were probably my next favorite. Loved the sauce and mushrooms on top. Farm salad was delish as well. Chicken thighs weren’t my fave but still scrumptious and my bf really enjoyed them.
I’ll be back to order 1,000 deviled eggs.
Holy food! This was our first stop on a weekend culinary adventure in celebration of my sweetheart’s birthday, and man, it did not disappoint.
We split the farmhouse salad and deviled eggs as a warmup, Bo went with the chicken thighs with a side of duck fat fries, and I chose the charcuterie board. Bo was offered a complementary dessert since he was the birthday boy, so he ordered the beignets. Every single thing we ate was delicious.
Besides having amazing food, service at the Salty Sow was phenomenal.
The restaurant has an upbeat, welcoming vibe. My only complaint is that the high top tables are too high, or the chairs are too low, and the seats are in desperate need of being replaced.
