Went back to Uchi while on a work trip. This time with a group of colleagues and we sat outside at a table. We ordered omakase. Not my preference but I still enjoyed it very much. I don’t remember all I ate as I didn’t take photo for all. I ate it before I remember to take a photo. The food was yummy. They had a lot of sake and wine options. Would definitely go back again.
Always a delight. Everything on the menu is good, we haven’t found anything that didn’t taste great. The additional ingredients never overpower the fish itself but are a subtle and sensible paring. The kitchen is very accommodating – I have a lot of food sensitivities and they always made sure to avoid them in every dish. Our servers are always pleasant to talk to. I also love the patio, the tables in the back have you seated on the wood benches, I love those, it feels idyllic.
One of the best sushi meals I’ve had. Certainly the best meal I’ve had in austin.
Very very very good
This pains me to write this review as I sincerely love Uchiko. This was my first visit to uchi and I expected the same great restaurant experience I have come to expect at Uchiko. When I called two weeks before and they asked if I could do Uchi I thought it sounded like fun. It was not!
The good: I really enjoyed a couple of dishes like the the Romain veggie hand roll with anchovy and the Tom Kha Salmon. The cauliflower was amazing
The bad:
The tempura shrimp was awful. The batter was so thick my wife compared It to a bad, greasy donut.
The Shag Roll was also in tempura and it was better than the tempura shrimp but it was tasteless which is something I never said about Uchiko. I found this to be a continuing theme throughout the evening.
The ham and egg roll, always a favorite, the 4 of us ordered 2 rolls and one came out normal and one came out with a tiny piece of very over cooked pork belly. The server who served it said some baloney about how they were the same and our server tried to make us feel weird about sending it back. Picture attached.
Special roll with salmon was lacking flavor.
Mackerel sashimi was just the fish with nothing added that I could taste.
King salmon sashimi lacked flavor.
We were actually thinking about asking for soy sauce which is crazy at this restaurant.
We ordered some oysters and they brought them out and they were different than the menu. They said they guessed the menu was just not updated and acted like it was strange that we were bothered by that. What restaurant of this price and caliber doesn’t bring you what you order off their menu and makes it seems like I’m doing something wrong by questioning it.
The reservation process leaves me feeling like I was tricked into going to an inferior restaurant.
If this were my first experience with these restaurants I would NEVER give either of them a second try.
BEST food experience in Austin! We didn’t have reservations and decided to go early. They accommodated us at the bar and it ended up being the best seat in the house. We went for happy hour and basically got everything our server and sushi chef recommended and it was all amazing. Listen to me…. This. Is. A. Must. Do! 😀
Im a bit disappointed and underwhelmed. I understand that california gets the freshest fish and it wouldnt be fair to compare. But for the price … its disgustingly expensive for less quality fish. We pretty much got their highest tier of omakase and i can honestly say i wont be coming back. Its not worth it.
If we could, we would give 0 star. This is a joke and an insult to the Japanese cuisine. Never in our life have tried one-bite sushi. It’s as big as my thumb and half of my husband’s little finger.
After trying many sushi restaurants all over in different countries including Japan, this restaurant is “eye-opening”!
They said they don’t serve traditional Japanese that’s why it’s different. Then we would recommend using a non-traditional names of the dishes and even the cuisine type. If it’s not a traditional sushi, then don’t call it sushi. Or highlight it saying they are NOT traditional.
Can you imagine paying $14 for a bite-size (your little finger size) Chutoro. Yes just 1 piece!
My husband asked me, “how’s taste?” I said, it’s too little for me to even taste it .
Rice is a absolutely not up to standard. And the fish, I am sorry I can’t taste the fish.
If you want real nigiri and Japanese cuisine, this is absolutely NOT the place to go.
Go somewhere else for sushi. Totally not worth it because you don’t know what you are eating!
We can guarantee you that the chef is not Japanese. Because no real Japanese chef will insult their cuisine. And one clear sign is that, no Japanese is there!
Perfect meal and experience every time ! Always fresh and tasty. Staff always accommodating 🙂 favorite sushi spot.
Never could figure out the hype of this place. We have tried it at least 5 or 6 times because we know how most people rave about it. Just cannot understand it’s popularity given the barely edible food. So sorry to say it so bluntly but it is just shy of awful.
If you are looking for high quality sushi, look no further.
It was amazing welcome dinner as we arrived to Austin. Our reservation was for 9.30 PM on a Thursday eve. The restaurant was packed!
I highly recommend to reserve a table ahead of time.
I loved the food, and how fresh everything is. I like the cool, easy going vibes too. We followed our server recommendations and liked almost everything.
My favorites were the sea urchin, eel, fatty tuna, scallops and the chocolate dessert.
I didn’t care for the few sushi rolls we ordered.
The prices are pretty high. It’s not cheap to dine here but that’s expected with such high quality fish on the menu.
